What are bridges?
If you have a small number of missing teeth, or need a few teeth to be extracted because of significant decay, you may feel very self-conscious about the gaps in your smile and have difficulties eating or speaking clearly. Gaps between your remaining teeth can sometimes be difficult to clean properly, leading to a build-up of plaque and tartar, and further decay.
Bridges are an ideal solution for resolving these problems. Using surrounding teeth for support, bridges look like your own teeth: we carefully colour-match porcelain to your natural shade to give your bridge an entirely natural-looking appearance.
How do bridges work?
At your first appointment, your dentist will discuss with you the various treatment options available. At Dentist@W2 we are pleased to be able to offer a wide range of cosmetic and restorative treatments to our patients. A bridge may be deemed most suitable if your surrounding teeth are strong enough to support it.
If a bridge is suitable your dentist will carry out all the necessary preparation work so that a custom made bridge can be constructed.
You will then need to return for a second appointment, at which your bridge will be permanently attached to your natural teeth, creating a strong, stable and beautiful smile.
Will a bridge work for me?
If you have a few missing teeth, a bridge may be suitable for you. If your teeth are missing following an extraction, you may need to wait a few weeks before having a bridge fitted, to allow time for your gums to heal and any swelling to subside.
Alternatives to having a bridge fitted include partial dentures or dental implants.
If a bridge is deemed an appropriate treatment by your dentist, it can last upwards of 10-15 years with good oral hygiene, and you will need to care for your bridge in the same way as you care for your natural teeth with regular brushing, flossing and check-ups with your dentist.
How long does it take to have a bridge fitted?
You will need two appointments: the first to examine your teeth for viability and to have the preparation work, the second a week or two later to have the bridge fitted.
